Many people looking to extend their homes are drawn to the light-filled openness of a wintergarden as their ideal solution. Relaxing in a wintergarden gives homeowners a strong connection to the outside whatever the season.
From the comfort of your home, the glass sides and roof all around portray the sense that you are in the garden communing with nature, with the associated feelgood factor that engenders. Not only does this predominantly glass structure offer additional space, the rooms behind it benefit from the extra light, too.
A far cry from a chilly conservatory which has to be closed off in winter, a wintergarden can be open plan with another room or the rest of the house.
The double-glazed panels and doors, used in conjunction with underfloor heating, mean it’s a useful space throughout the year to complement your lifestyle. It’s important to be aware, though, that the insulation values of double glazing and aluminium frames can never compete with those of a solid wall.
Designs and configurations
At ODC, we design and build every wintergarden as a bespoke structure to reflect the style and design of your house, in standard or bespoke colours.
Our distinctive wintergardens cover a range of different requirements, including SDL Nobiles for corner roofs and SDL Avante Garde with wood interior facings. Our best-selling Akzent Plus has slim aluminium sections and can be used across large spans.
Sides to suit
The sides of the structure are usually a combination of fixed panels and bi-fold doors to increase versatility. The option of opening up one, two or even three sides to the outdoors is very appealing, creating a space that naturally flows – ideal for family gatherings and parties.
Whether your space is small, large or something in between, wintergardens can increase your home’s footprint. One of the smallest we’ve created was just 3m x 1m, bringing added light into a sunken patio area. The largest was a 6m x 6m multi-purpose room used as a key space for family life.
The orientation of your house in no barrier to whether you can install a wintergarden, however you may need to take steps to ensure it stays at an optimum temperature for maximum usability. That may mean installing roof vents and or external awnings for ventilation and solar shading in summer. These can be automated to open and close with the internal temperature and weather conditions.
A high-end alternative to traditional house extensions, prices for wintergardens can start from as little as £15,000.
